About Alexander Kowalski
Alexander Kowalski belongs to the generation of German techno producers who were strongly affected by the social upheaval following the fall of the Berlin Wall and by the enormous sense of freedom in East Berlin during the ensuing years. As with many of his peers like Modeselektor, Marcel Dettmann, Apparat or Paul Kalkbrenner, Alexander came from the former GDR (East Germany). In spite of the hazards, he successfully engaged in a musical career during the nineties, and today he holds the international scene in suspense with his productions.
Alexander Kowalski reflects back on a 15-year career that, beginning with the first baby steps in the Berlin underground, finds him today continuing as an internationally sought after producer, remixer, live act, DJ and successful label owner with unmistakable style and an impressive discography. His albums “Echoes” “Progress”, “Response” and “Changes” are regarded as classics, and all document the notable musical development of an artist who consistently and straightforwardly enriches techno music’s landscape. Powerful, richly detailed and virtuously produced techno tracks such as “Belo Horizonte”, “Speaker Attack” or “The Heat Of The Night” have become Alexander’s often copied trademark. Through his emotional intensity and honest musicality, the striking vocal techno songs “All I Got To Know” feat. Raz Ohara, “Lock Me Up” feat. Turner and “Can’t Hold Me Back” feat. Fritz Kalkbrenner rank among the tracks that guarantee euphoric audience response at international festivals. Among the numerous prominent artists who highly regard Alexander’s unmistakable signature remixing skills are Dave Gahan, Agoria, Paul Kalkbrenner, Tom Clark and Octave One.
From the earliest stages of his career Alexander Kowalski acquired a reputation as an exceptional live act in which the dramatic development of suspense in his productions transposes powerfully at peak time on the stage. An internationally regarded phenomenon is Alexander’s ability to create epic breaks in order to savor the interaction with the audience. He is a welcomed guest at the most important international festivals such as Time Warp, I Love Techno, Monegros, Creamfields, Nature One, Melt!, SonneMondSterne, Wire Japan and Mayday. He has also augmented this during the last few years with appearances as DJ. Deploying at times up to four decks Alexander Kowalski fuses his tried and tested live philosophy and digital DJing into a unique experience.
Consequently in 2009 Alexander took the step towards artistic independence. After founding his own label Damage Music Berlin, it has skirted short-lived trends to become easily established as one of the most important innovative triggers in the international scene at the junction between house and techno. Damage Music’s artist roster includes Alexander Kowalski as mastermind and renowned artists like Dirty Doering, Vince Watscon, Extrawelt and Dosem.
