Meet the Italian artist Roberto Surace, who answered a few questions about his career, the electronic music scene in Italy, and more!
We met with the Italian DJ, producer, and label owner Roberto Surace! He answered a few questions for us.
Hello Clubbing TV, thanks for the invitation! I am Roberto Surace, Dj and Electronic Music Producer born in Rome and raised in Calabria. From an early age, I was passionate about music in general.
Tell us about your career path.
I started playing at the age of 15 the first popular instruments such as Organetto, Tamburello, Lira, Zampogna, and even a little bit of drums. At the age of 18, I began to have a passion for electronic music, initially approaching concerts by other DJs who fascinated me and who made me discover the various facets of electronic music. I bought my first compact console starting to decide what my mood was.
After 2 years towards 21 years, it was not enough for me to play other people’s records but I wanted something of my own. I started with a mini midi keyboard and a drum machine and I produced my first ones in 2011. The records were of course never released because I was never convinced.
After 2 years from my first production, some labels have begun to believe in my sound! It allowed me to make some releases, to be known by listeners not only as a DJ but also as a producer.
Today I don’t have an absolute fixed genre. I like to range a lot in my songs to allow listeners a total variability. They can discover my various facets. Even my DJ sets are improvised as I like to watch the dancefloor. I have never prepared a DJ set in my life! I think the connection between me and the audience must be spontaneous, not prepared!
What is your musical world?
My musical world does not have a very definitive description, I love soul, jazz, Funky, house. I always try to range on them by creating new genres because I believe that today we always need to do something different to fascinate the public. Monotony and mono gender is not part of me!
How is SURA MUSIC doing?
SURA MUSIC is my label born in February 2019 … still very small, but I always try to be super professional by putting my all into it, but as we all know, the paths of the labels are very long! SURA does not have a fixed genre, just like me from the throne in my productions. I only release tracks that I like and play in my DJ sets and above all only of young talents or emerging ones like me! I’ve never aimed to go out with stars, and I want to grow my label organically by targeting those who have just started and maybe have a talent that few people know.
The label’s motto is “Only Fresh and Clean Groove” because I think that the fundamental thing is not the genre but the groove. That is what makes people dance. Even today I certainly cannot define it as anything other than a small growing label, which is doing everything to be as professional as possible and try to give visibility to the very young who may not have released yet… I believe in this label, and I hope to be in the future when it grows up, in 5 years or maybe more….
The springboard for the very young who sometimes are not listened to so much, due to the number of demos that the big labels receive … to give them a hand to go out and try to promote them to enter the electronic music circuit as well as allow them to make the releases …. In the new era, in the future, it would be easy to bring out those already established… I love ‘step by step’, it is the mood of my life …
How is the electronic music scene in Italy?
I think the Italian music scene of electronic music is really full of talented poeple .. most of the Italian producers know how to work very well both in terms of productions and Dj sets. Of course, this is my point of view 🙂
How did you manage to go through the sanitary crisis?
Since the pandemic started, I had two choices: to get depressed or to go all out and create something new and not think negatively! I organized several studio sessions to create new music for when it starts again. I took it like this because it was the only thing that could make me feel good in this stormy period. Producing music makes me feel good!
What would be your ideal party or festival?
The parties are all beautiful, and I think every promoter puts his heart into the event! Having said that, my favorites are the ones organized by Defected, Music On, and Elrow because there you can listen to some really good House music.
Tell us about your next release.
Soon, my next single, ‘Make Me Wanna’ will be released. It is a record that I created in this pandemic that gave me vibes of hope of returning to ordinary happiness. I listen to it every day, thinking about when I will be able to try it on the dancefloor. I’m curious about the reaction because it’s something different from my usual … I always like to try making different moods. It has a groove with very percussive sounds, accompanied by a lovely and summery guitar. Moreover, there is a voice in the break that creates that charge before the song restarts. I hope the listeners will like it and will appreciate this new style. I will always bring out my groove but with more summery and sweet sounds!
