This year’s event pushed creative boundaries with standout performances such as Kiani del Valle Performance Group’s CORTEX and ASIANDOPEBOYS’ 6-hour multimedia show Physis. Live sets from artists like Air, Floating Points, Jessie Ware, Ki/Ki, Octave One, VMO, and Tommy Cash, along with Laurent Garnier’s highly anticipated 3-hour set at SonarVillage by Estrella Damm, were highlights that captivated the audience. The debut of the SonarLab by Printworks stage, featuring its impressive vertical screen and horizontal lighting design, added a new dimension to the festival’s visual experience.
A Global Gathering with an Inclusive Vibe
Sónar’s atmosphere is a testament to its global appeal. We met festival-goers from all the corners of the world, from Thailand to Brazil, and beyond, all united by their love for electronic music. The diversity in fashion and personal expression was astounding; attendees felt free to showcase their unique styles without fear of judgment. This sense of inclusivity made everyone feel welcome, emphasizing that the festival is about the music and the shared experience.
Unforgettable Sets: Day and Night Highlights
The musical journey at Sónar was filled with unforgettable moments. During the day, HorseGirl impressed us with her eclectic and energetic style, creating a vibrant atmosphere that resonated with the crowd. Kittin b2B David Vunk delivered a seamless blend of their distinct sounds, while Sevdaliza’s performance stood out with her haunting vocals and experimental beats.
As night fell, the festival’s energy soared to new heights. Jennifer Cardini b2b HAAI set the stage with their dynamic synergy, creating an exhilarating vibe. Anetha’s relentless beats maintained the momentum, providing a powerful and immersive experience. Ben Böhmer’s melodic house offered a refreshing contrast, bringing a wave of calm to the intense night. Paul Kalkbrenner’s set was one of the most anticipated and memorable, showcasing why he remains a legend in the electronic music scene. Marlon Hoffstadt emerged as a standout performer, while Laurent Garnier’s set at the Sonar Village Stage transformed the crowd into a sea of euphoria. Mainline Magic Orchestra, with surprise guest Partiboi69, delivered a high-energy performance that had everyone dancing, marking one of the festival’s top moments.
Sónar+D: Where Innovation Meets Creativity
Sónar+D’s daytime program expanded beyond music, highlighting innovation in the creative industries. The event featured immersive AV, film, fashion, gaming, and AI through various talks, lectures, shows, and presentations. The Project Area, supported by Fundació Banc Sabadell, showcased over 100 projects from 19 countries. A standout for us was Thymus Vulgaris by Ferran Lega Lladós, an interactive sound installation translating the biodata of thyme plants into audible sounds. Visitors could manipulate the sound through touch and lighting changes, exploring the multi-species relationships between humans and plants. This project delved into the historical and political conflicts of the Tomillar de Alfés, reflecting on humanity’s evolving relationship with nature.
