From August 7 to 10, 2025, the Untold Festival in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, will welcome world-renowned DJs but it also proudly showcases its local and regional artists. With its own unique sonic signature, Romania presents through Untold a range of talents whose music still has many stories to tell…
The history of Romanian electronic music was born from a powerful act of creation following the fall of the Ceausescucommunist dictatorship (1965–1989). The regime imposed strict cultural censorship, banning any music seen as decadent or Western. Records by bands like Depeche Mode or Pink Floyd could only circulate underground.
Ro-minimal: A Symbolic Movement
It was only after 1989 that the underground culture truly exploded. Youth discovered raves, techno, and began claiming their own spaces for celebration. It was in this cultural vacuum that Ro-minimal (Romanian minimal) emerged in the early 2000s. This genre developed with a stripped-down, repetitive, and even introspective aesthetic a gentle revolution, wordless yet radical in its sound. With influences from classical, jazz, and ambient music, Ro-minimal has established itself as a truly original form of electronic music made in Romania.
“No other cultural movement from Eastern Europe has achieved such global recognition,” said DJ Cezar in a 2024 interview with Mixmag. A pioneer of the movement and member of the [a:rpia:r] collective, he’ll perform at Untold for the second time this year.
But he won’t be the only representative of the scene: the Galaxy Stage and Fortune Stage will also host artists such as Raresh, Priku, and the duo SIT (formed by Cristi Cons and Vlad Caia).

Their presence at Untold 2025 highlights the movement’s growing role in the international electronic music scene.
As for us we’ll be there, and we can’t wait to tell you all about it!
